The Annual Business Lunch has gone from strength to strength since it moved to the O̢۪Reilly Hall in UCD and 2018 was no different. This year we had the largest attendance ever for a BCU Business Lunch with 612 attendees. It was a truly impressive gathering of past pupils with representations from every decade spanning back to the 50̢۪s and there was even a couple of past pupils from the Class of 2018.
Fr Marc Whelan started the lunch with grace before the MC for the day Vice President Stephen Mullin got the proceedings well and truly underway.
The guest speaker on the day was Kilkenny Hurling Manager Brian Cody who spoke about different Management styles and strategies across Sport and Business. He was a hugely impressive speaker who had the crowd entertained from start to finish. His no nonsense approach to managing teams of people resonated with the large audience.
The Business Person of the year Honouree was the hugely popular Steve McCarthy who entertained the crowd with his story of triumph over adversity over a long and varied career.
His story was compelling as he spoke about obstacles he had to overcome and the Lifelong Blackrock Friends who stuck with him through good times and bad.
He also imparted some tips for the younger members of the audience around good habits early in your career.
Steve thanked Blackrock Collegeand Principal Alan MacGinty for all their support over the years.
President John Rogan outlined the Union̢۪s key drivers for the next year and raised a toast to the Fathers of everyone in attendance which also included many guests.
A collection was held for the Blue and White Support Group and the Union Mission Fund which raised over €11,000 for the two charities. We are truly grateful for the generosity of all those who were in attendance.
The TY students were a massive help with the running of the day as was Brigid O̢۪Byrne from the Union Office.
The food was excellent and Knights Catering were superb on the day.
We are looking forward to our next marquee event in February – The Annual Dinner.
