On Friday 17th February the President, Eunan O'Carroll (1984) hosted the 119th Union Annual Dinner in the dining hall of the College. This, the flagship event of the Union, was attended by over 200 Past Pupils and Guests of the Union.
The MC for the evening was John O'Doherty (1986), Union Secretary, who individually welcomed the Guests from visiting schools. Fr Nash opened the event with a sincere and heartfelt invocation.
Albert and Mary from the College catering team pulled out all the stops and produced and served a menu to be proud of. This was supported by the amount of "clean" plates going back to the kitchen after the main course.
The more formal side of the evening was started with an address by Fr O'Brolchain, who updated the attendees on ALL the good work that the College is doing on a continual basis. Fr. O'Brolchain sincerely Thanked the Union for all the support and assistance which the Union provide to the school.
This year's recipient of the President's Award, was the very popular Donal Brennan. The video, which was produced by Peter Murnaghan and Greg Manahan, perfectly summed up Donal's life and his contribution to Blackrock College and Willow Park. Unsurprisingly, Donal was so humble and grateful in receiving the Award.
This set the stage for the much anticipated speech of the President Eunan O'Carroll (1984) who passionately updated the attendees on all the work and successes of the Union throughout the year. The President also highlighted the great work being done continuously by the staff of Blackrock College and Willow Park and the important role that Union provides in supporting all aspects of College life.
The atmosphere in the room for the whole night was friendly and good humoured, with plenty of feedback from the guests commenting on how well the night went. Some, of course, undertook the obligatory walk across College Grounds to that well known establishment on Booterstown Ave.
Like all great events, they do not happen on their own, so we would like to thank Brigid O'Byrne (Union Office), Stephen Mullin (1982) and Mark Rogan (1995) for all their organising in the lead up to the dinner, although in truth, Brigid did most of the work! A special note of thanks must go to Stephen Noonan (1981) and John (1982) and Kieran (1984) Gleeson for ensuring that refreshments were available on the night. And finally to the College, for allowing us to gather and catch up for the 119th time.
Remember to book early next year.
