The quality of recent Past versus Present debates was witnessed by the large attendance at this year’s contest in the College Lecture Hall on the motion
‘THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT PROFESSIONALISM HAS DESTROYED THE SPIRIT OF SPORT’. In keeping with tradition, the debate was a feisty, keenly contested affair with robust exchanges and sharp wit on both sides. The Past students were represented by Kevin Heavey (class of 2014) the Gold Medal debating champion in the College last year and winner of the 2015 maiden speakers competition in UCD recently where he is studying Business and Economics. Hugo MacNeill (class of 1977) the former Irish and Lions rugby international: Neil Francis (class of 1981) the former Irish rugby international and Sunday Independent rugby correspondent; Fergus Slattery (class of 1966) the former Irish and Lions flanker and Alex Owens (class of 2011) who is last year’s Auditor of the L&H in UCD where he is studying Medicine. The School Team comprised Joshua Kieran Glennon, Tomás Beecham, Joshua Gorman Climax (all 6th Year), Stephen Rooney and Ben Jordan (both 5th Year).

The debate ranged from the playing pitches of Willow Park, through the hurling fields of Kilkenny, onward to the English Premiership, across to the Palio di Sienna and beyond. The contest ebbed back and forth with both teams passionate in their argument. Despite excellent contributions from all, especially Joshua Gorman Climax and Joshua Kieran Glennon, the Past Students shaded the contest with Hugo MacNeill picking up the prize as best speaker.
Thanks to Union President Shane Murphy (class of 1981), chairman of the debate Dr. Dermot Kelly (class of 1981), timekeeper Scott Donohoe (Transition Year), the adjudicators Mr John Sheil, Ms Cathy Kelleher and Eoin Healy (class of 2010) and all who attended for their contribution to this important Union event. It truly showcased the talent of the boys and the camaraderie within and between the student body and the Union. If there was a disappointment, it was that this is but a once a year event!
