Camino Completed
Date : Friday, 21st October 2016
The Blackrock College Union has a recent but strong tradition of participating in the great Camino pilgrimage dating back to 2008 when a group of 45 past students led by then Union President, Eugene Harrington completed the "Camino Anglaise" after sailing from Ireland in the Jeanie Johnston.
In the College a group of transition year students now completes a five day section of the Camino each year.
Greg Moore, when President of the Union in 2014 decided to embark upon a different but equally challenging undertaking, the "Camino Francaise", an 800km walk starting in France in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and finishing in Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain.
The Union Group of eight past students led by Greg and including a Spiritan Chaplain for each stage, completed the total 800km pilgrimage over a two and half year period comprising five separate walks.
The final stage was finished from October 2nd to October 7th, which culminated in their arrival into the centre of Santiago de Campostela. The group were accompanied on this 6 day stage by the Principal of the Spiritans in Ireland, Fr. Marc Whelan C.S.Sp and Union past president Paul Gardiner.
The current President Brian O' Neill walked with the group for the last day into Santiago de Compostela where the group were met by their spouses and Fr Tom Nash. They attended mass in the 12th century Cathedral in Santiago de Campostela that evening which was con celebrated by Fr Marc Whelan and then attended a formal Union dinner to receive their scrolls of achievement.
The Union would like to thank, Greg Moore for completing this great pilgrimage. Thanks are also due to Cahir Doherty (1992) and Dermot Kelly (1981) for their considerable assistance to Greg in organising the event.
