Blackrock College Union Golf Society Matchplay championship
Date : Saturday, 25th August 2018
We are delighted to inform you that Morgan Crowe has won the Blackrock College Union Golf Society Matchplay championship after beating David McNamara this August .
Both players enjoyed a keenly contested match played in Killiney Golf Club on Wednesday this with a difference of ten strokes (Morgan 3 and David 13), both contestants played canny and highly competitive golf in an atmosphere of excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie.
Some magnificent shots were played, including a couple of moon-raking putts from each contender.
Both players scored better than their handicaps with Morgan hitting level par throughout. After going 2 down David pulled back to rest level with Morgan as they came into the final straight. Still level after 18 holes on the fading light on Killiney̢۪s links, the pair resolved to play on in the moonlight.
Both eager to win, and David with a shot in hand on the 19th, Morgan drove slightly right into the margin of trees to the side of the first fairway. He then produced a magnificent 9 iron from about 160 yards out, manufacturing a draw to navigate his ball around arboreal obstacles to rest near the front right of the green. The Pin was far up at the back.
David landed on the green for three, to see Morgan putt near perfectly to the side of the hole for a conceded 4 . Having putted well short of the hole, David missed his two putts to halve the hole as he watched his second putt roll around the hole at least once and come to rest inches away.
It was time then for both players to shake hands and congratulate each other on a fine match pitted between competitive players carrying diverse handicaps.
After dissecting the match over some reasonable refreshment in Finnegan̢۪s bar in Dalkey, it was time to bid farewell and for Morgan to savour his worthy win.
Well done Morgan.
