Past v Present Debate 2018
The annual Past v Present debate took place on February 8th in the Lecture Hall of the College. The Hall was packed to capacity and the audience of students, teachers, parents and past pupils participated in a very lively and enjoyable debate on the motion that âThis house fears the harmful effect of Social Media on Societyâ.
The past pupils team of David Fanning (1971), Shane Murphy SC (1981), Morgan Shelley BL (2001) and Joshua Kieran Glennon (2015) proposed the motion.
The motion was opposed by the present students: Max McKenna (5th Year), OisÃn Ryan (6th Year), Michael Ryan (5th Year) and Stephen Ryan (6th Year).
The debate was opened by Eunan OâCarroll (1984), President of the Union and it was chaired by Eoin Martin BL (2005). When the judges retired to deliberate, Eoin presided with aplomb over a very animated debate in which many members of the audience participated with great enthusiasm and eloquence.
After lengthy deliberations, the judging panel of Cathy Kelleher, John Sheil (1974) and Kevin Heavey (2014) eventually decided that the students had shaded the contest and they were declared to be winners of the debate.
This was an excellent debate and it continued a tradition which represents an important point of contact between the Union and the College. As John Henry Newman advised, debate is a vital component of education â⦠cor ad cor loquiturâ.
The debate was organised by John Sheil on behalf of the College and by Shane Murphy on behalf of the Union.
