Seniors lunch Report EPIC Exhibition at CHQ in Dublin,s IFSC
The seniors lunch late autumn venue was the acclaimed EPIC Exhibition in the CHQ building in the IFSC. Fr. Nash had recommended the location and his suggestion was fully endorsed by those attending.
We were also blessed with the help and fulsome welcome we received from Mervyn Greene ( year of 1977) and his most obliging team. Mervyn is co-owner and CEO of the CHQ which houses the EPIC Exhibition, the shopping mall and food hall, and an avant- garde technology business start-up incubator where some outstanding successes for young Irish companies have occurred.
The EPIC tour tells the story of Irish emigres throughout the world; how colonies of Irish people set up and flourished not only in Britain and the USA, but also Canada's Newfoundland and in South America, most notably in Argentina. We also noted the wine geese of the Bordeaux wine region and Irish influence further afield in Asia and Australia. We learned of suffering, hardship, a strong work ethic, a desire for self improvement in conditions often not afforded Irish people in the stifling imperial milieu at home. We learned also of inspirational political leadership, military honours, economic, literary and scientific fame, fortune and renown. It was a breathtaking tour based on a, user- friendly, highly advanced designed, and technologically driven, platform.
After the tour ( the quickest 2 hours we have ever spent) we repaired to the Hilton hotel for a convivial luncheon. So interesting was the exhibition that we had to work hard to draw the last few members from the exhibition - only on the promise of getting them access to " finish of" their tour after lunch. The EPIC kindly assisted us in securing this second bite of the cherry for those interested.
After lunch David Mc Namara thanked everyone for their support not just on the day but over the last 3 years as our Seniors Luncheon brigade has gone from strength to strength . David also stressed that wives and friends of members past and present are most welcome at our gatherings. He also praised Fr Tom Nash whose original brainchild this was and the attending Greg Moore former Union President who ran with the concept and setup this worthy initiative. David and the Union are now looking forward to future years ( as he will be stepping down rom the Union committee by rotation). He highlighted the need for interested senior members loosely described as 60+ years or retired, to come forward to form a small group to carry on and expand this work which is merely the foundation of what can be a much a more comprehensive and tailored programme for our senior members.
