Last May, Just before the summer break, the members present at the AGM voted in favour of passing possibly the single most important change to face the Union in many years.
On the table was the concept of Universal Membership. In a nutshell what they were deciding on was the right of any past pupil of the college to elect to become a life member of the Union without a requirement to pay a fee. Each individual who accepts the offer is immediately endowed with the same rights that full members have enjoyed to date.
With the yes vote it essentially means that the Union is in a position to invite everyone who passed through Blackrock College, even if only for a few years, to become part of the largest past pupils fraternity in the country for life.
The challenges facing the Union are many. Not least is our commitment to try and contact every past pupil so we can inform them of their right to become full lifetime members. With over 13,000 former students eligible it is a daunting task but one that the committee and the volunteers they are seeking to help will no doubt achieve.
With your support we will be able to continue to provide mentoring programs, organise reunions, business lunches, facilitate senior gatherings, provide Christmas parties for underprivileged children, provide support groups for past pupils and their families in difficulty, support the great work of the VDP, and much more. In addition to the work done that relates specifically to past pupils and the Union charities ΓΆ€“ The Blue and White and The mission Fund ΓΆ€“ we are heavily involved with the school providing career talks, mock interviews, fundraising for capital projects to name just a few.
Your support will be vital in continuing this proud tradition.
Over the coming weeks and months we will be looking for help to secure the future of your Union. The first and most important way you can do this is by agreeing to accept full membership for life. After that it is up to you to decide how you would like to be involved. It might be just staying in touch with your year or even offering your expertise to help a fellow alumni get back on track ΓΆ€“ The list goes on.
We will very shortly begin the process of recruitment and information dissemination. If you want to help out please contact the union office union@rock.ie, richard@thecontentpartnership.ie or eunan@coreconsulting.ie and we will be in touch very shortly.
