Lourdes 2016
Date : Thursday, 20th October 2016
The Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place every year on the 7th to the 12th of September, since 1913. About 2,000 pilgrims travel from all over the Diocese. Of these, 180 are sick pilgrims staying at the Accueil Notre Dame, with many of the facilities of a modern hospital. Another 550 of the pilgrims are voluntary helpers, including doctors, nurses, ward staff and general support volunteers known as handmaids and brancardiers, as well as a team of chaplains.
A further 200 young people assist as well in the care of the sick pilgrims and many of these are from secondary schools and colleges from around the Diocese. The rest of the pilgrimage is made up of Parish Groups and individuals from every corner of the Dublin Diocese.
Blackrock College started sending sixth years on the Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in 2004. Every year since then the number of past pupils have grown steadily and this year we had a very strong 23 Rock Men who sat down for dinner.
After dinner we made our way to the grotto where we lit a candle and gathered in prayer for the intentions of all the Past and Present pupils of Blackrock College. Lourdes is a place where people come to strenghthen their beliefs, renew their visions and values in life and develop their faith in Our Lady.
We are very grateful to the union for sponsoring a small but very meaningful event throughout our week in Lourdes.
