The Union working with Carleen McGee and her careers team in the College organised and hosted the following career evenings for parents of the 5
th Year boys;
Monday 12th of September
Carleen McGee, head of Career Guidance & Counselling in Blackrock College chaired the evening of career advice for the 5
th Year parents. The evening consisted of the following presentations;
- 1. Career Opportunities in the Present Economic Climate
Speaker: Professor Brian MacCraith, President, Dublin City University
- 2. The Educational Objectives of Blackrock College
Speaker: Mr. Alan McGinty, College Principal
After the two talks there was a Q & A session covering all aspects of career options.
Monday 19th of September
Union President, Mr. Brian O̢۪Neill chaired the evening of career advice for the 5
th Year parents by explaining the Union Careers programme to the parents setting out the range of career and networking events the Union organised each year for the 14,000 past pupils. Brian then introduced the following;
Keynote Speaker: Mr Peter Cosgrove – Director of Sales & Marketing , CPL & Founder of the Future of Work Initiative in Ireland on the Topic of,
The Future workplace, how the careers and jobs of the future are changing and what you need to know.
This was followed by individual talks from the following past pupils of the class of 2009,
- 1. Brian O’Brolchain – Class of 2009
Brian did an undergrad in UCD in Electronic Engineering and then opted for the 3 year BSc rather than the 4 year BEng.
He then went on to do a 2 year Masters in Engineering with Business, again in UCD.
After his Masters Brian went straight into his current job as a Financial Software Consultant in a company called Murex where he has been working for the last 2 years.
- 2. James McElroy – Class of 2009
James graduated from Blackrock College in 2009, he then went onto study in DIT. Once he graduated he set up a website called HouseMyDog which is an online platform that connects dog owners with local dog sitters. Like Airbnb for dogs.
HouseMyDog has grown to over 30,000 users throughout Ireland & the UK and is about to launch in Germany.
James was also recently included in the Sunday Business Post's Top 30 under 30: The ones to watch and won Irelands Best Young Entrepreneur in 2015.
- 3. John Flynn – Class of 2009
John Left Rock in 2009 and did a BComm in UCD with an Erasmus in Montreal. He then studied for a Masters in Accounting in Smurfit Business School.
John is has recently completed his ACA accountancy qualifications and is completing a training contract in PwC.
There was a Q & A at the end of the talks where the parents got to question the panel on their specific career queries.
