BLACKROCK COLLEGE UNION FUNDING MODEL Date : Thursday, 17th May 2018
Dear Union Member,
I am writing to you in my capacity as Treasurer of the Union.
As you may be aware in order for the Union to engage fully with all of our 13,700 past pupils, we voted at our 2015 AGM to offer membership of the Union at no cost to past pupils. We have been pleased to maintain this policy and the move has resulted in a substantial growth in membership which will hopefully continue in the months and years ahead.
Since that decision in 2015, the Union has funded itself and its activities from sponsorship and generous ad hoc donations from former subscribers.
However, membership at no cost to past pupils does not mean there are no costs to running the Union - there are material costs to running the Union and these have understandably increased with the growth in membership. We operate the Union centre and database with only a part time staff member – all other contributions are voluntary.
We incur costs in operating and running the wide range of activities in Ireland, the UK and North America. Our wide range of activities support our past pupils, the College and our two deserving charitable causes – the Blue and White Fund and the Mission Fund. Our many events include the Annual Business Lunch; the Annual Dinner; the UK Business Lunch, Seniors Lunches, the organisation of six class reunions for 10,20,30,40,50 and 60 years out; Business Mentoring for school leavers; Career Guidance presentations for current pupils, the Rock Run, the Golf Society and many more.
Since that decision in 2015, the Union has funded itself and its activities from sponsorship and generous ad hoc donations from former payees of membership subscriptions. However, to move your Union to the next level and to promote and run our events to the appropriate standard, we are appealing to the wider membership to make one annual voluntary donation of any amount - €20, €50 or €100 perhaps to help defray the minimal annual operating costs of the Union.
We fully accept that you may not be able or may not wish to do this. However, if you do decide to donate, we have here a link to a direct debit formwhich should be returned to the Union Office, Blackrock College, Blackrock, Co. Dublin. https://preview.tinyurl.com/DirectDebit18.
Alternatively, you can make a donation by cheque to the Union office or online at https://www.rockunion.ie/make_donation.php once you are logged in to the website. If you can̢۪t log on please contact the Union office directly at unionoffice@rock.ie.
We can assure you that your contribution will be used entirely for Union activities as noted above as we seek to enhance further the role and the services provided by the largest Past Pupils Union on the island of Ireland.
